Something Cool About Detroit - Eastern Market

I moved to the Detroit Area in 2001. I didn’t know very much about the area, but I heard plenty. Around the nation, haven’t we all?

It wasn’t until 2007 before I heard about one of the coolest places EVER—IN the City of Detroit. I didn’t actually visit the place until 2008.

Where is this place?

Get Your Fruits & Vegetables

I’m talking about Eastern Market. This is a WAY cool place! Really!!!

Eastern Market is a Farmers’ Market—a HUGE one! Every Saturday, there is an area that becomes this transformed area. Roughly, it is two square blocks. Honestly, it might be larger that.

This just accounts for the things “under the tent.” There are all sorts of warehouses and storefronts along the outside area of the tent, too.

As you’d expect from a Farmers’ Market, you can get all sorts of fruits and vegetables.

You can get all sorts of great deals, but it is the variety that sets apart this place.

Later in the day, it’s the deals that make it special. Already, there are lots of great deals, but when the vendors start getting nervous about having to bring home unsold goods, they start slashing prices like they’re dragons, and you benefit.

But I’m a Meat Eater—Not a Fruits & Vegetables Kind of Guy

As you are walking from your parking spot to the main event, you know you’re getting close when you start smelling something. It’s the same smell every time, too.

As you get closer, you start to realize that you’re smelling meat being barbecued on what seems like about 300 feet of grill after grill placed beside each other. Even if you don’t eat meat, that is one of the best smells ever known to man.

Plus, you have Wiggly’s Warehouse of Meats. That’s a horrendous name, but they are known for their great meat.

My favorite, though, is a fish market that also sells sausage and other meats. The best part is the sausage pita sandwiches. You get to pick 2, 3, or more types of sausage that they put in your pita sandwich. These are messy, and, of course, they are so good.

I don’t even really like food all that much!

Besides juices, honey, baked goods, there are all sorts of things that you can buy. There are several stores that, once you’re inside them, remind you of old-time general stores you’d expect to see in a small country town.

Often, you hear music playing. Sometimes, different small bands will play. Other times, you will just hear an amazing percussionist wailing away on his bongos.
