Short Courses:Discovering the fun of baking cupcakes & cookies!

Who wants a fancy dessert with a foreign name nobody can pronounce, when you can have a delicious cupcake? Plain, with original vanilla flavour, or chocolate, topped with a fancy icing swirl, sprinkles and birthday candles; cupcakes are so much more than just another sweet treat ... they are a lifestyle.

What many fans may not know is that cupcakes were invented in the 19th Century, in America, and were not necessarily small cakes. The name "cup cake" was used because the ingredients for these dishes were measured in cups instead of being weighed, as had been the tradition so far.

Another explanation for the name is that some women would bake their goods in small containers, including convenient tea cups. Because the cups were much smaller then traditional baking pans, they would take less time in the hearth ovens and decreased the chance of burning, a common occurrence with bigger cakes.

Today, baking cupcakes is a breeze. Muffin and cupcake molds are plentiful and with temperature controlled ovens, equipped with timers, and paper mold liners, the chances of burning your baked goodies are rather slim. There are various kinds of cupcake molds. They vary in size and shape, and putting your teeth in a heart-shaped cupcake is no longer unusual. Cupcake molds can be metal or made from heat resistant, silicone based materials.

Cupcakes come in countless tasty flavors and can be decorated in every possible way - even with ganache icing. Imagination has no limits and they can be dressed up for every occasion. They can be made to look like pretty flowers, have clown faces, wear a party hat, or be the resting place for a sugar skeleton. Some artistic bakers have even placed cupcakes on a stick and transformed them into yummy lollipops.

Homemade cookies are another wonderful baking product. They are fun to make and you can enjoy their divine aroma even before they are out of the oven. It draws the children to the kitchen, brings a smile to grandpa's wrinkled face and creates a lip-smacking birthday treat nobody will refuse.

Cookies are traditionally fairly simple to make and generally consist of a combination of sugar, flour, butter/margarine and eggs. The amounts used will depend on the recipe and additional ingredients. Added flavouring can be fruit, juices, chocolate, jams and anything that combines well with cookie dough.

Oatmeal, gingerbread, butterscotch pecan and peanut butter cookies are traditional favourites and let's not forget the much-loved chocolate chip. They too can be whipped up in a jiffy, if you know what you are doing. If not, you could sign up for a hands-on short courses where, in a few hours, you will learn how to prepare dough, feel comfortable around a baking oven and put your decorating creativity to good use. You will be surprised at the hidden talents you posses!

Participating in a cupcake and cookie baking class is not only exciting, it will also give you satisfaction and, as an added bonus, at the end of the day, you will be able to take your freshly baked goodies home to share with family and friends. Can it get any better?
